The Apostle of Panzer is a Legendary Boss, and one of the highest and most trusted members of the Cult of Panzer. He is generally third of the Cult, Dr. Lacus managing to slip into second for his longevity and trustworthiness. Belisarius and him have an odd relationship of trying to constantly outdo each other for attention and reward from the Archprophet. The Apostle is the first boss of the Tower of Gladii, does most of the paperwork, and acts as the inquisitor of the Cult of Panzer, bringing in, interrogating, and torturing suspected spies within the Cult. Is one of the few bosses subject to Health Scaling.

Design

The Apostle of Panzer looks like a large dark gray tank. On top of his head is a small stone-looking crown with a green gem. The two side spikes of the crown look like the famous Panzer dragon symbol facing in their appropriate directions, and the middle spike is regular, with the gem sitting near the rim where the three spikes meet. The Apostle's crown extends downward from its center and sides, making it look both like a crown and a helmet, shrouding much of the Apostle's top half. A blood red sash runs the length of the body, from the top left about where the helmet ends, to his bottom right. On this are three vials of different dark colors, similar in the way to how Ennealis has her grenades. From his sides, two dark gray half circle shapes extend, one on each side. While majority of these shoulder plates are red, the outline is thick and a very dark gray. From where his body meets each shoulder plate, two black arms stretch, each ending in smaller gray tank hands. In each hand he wields a twisted blade, each having gray metallic guards and handles, bright gray metal swirling with red energy making up each blade. A green gem sits in the center of each blade's handle.

The Arena

The Apostle of Panzer is fought in a large room following the destruction of the four Chaos Dominators near the entrance of the Tower of Gladii. The room is actually pretty average sized, not very large, and octagonal, with a small portion of the room being slightly exaggerated to appear as an ascended platform. Players can not get onto his platform until the Apostle is dead. A large red carpet leads up to it from the entrance, with three torches on each side leading up to the platform. What look like torture machines line the walls, and the floor is a dull dark stone brick, stained with blood.

The Fight

Phase 1

The Apostle begins at the center of the ascended platform in the back, with his swords sheathed behind him. He looks firm, squinting his barely visible eyes as the players approach. To his side, two big tanks that look medieval executioners, with black coverings and wielding axes in their arms sit. He will motion his hand as the doors to the arena close, the two Torturers moving forward off of the platform and into the battle field.

Each Torturer has 15000 health, and act almost identically but on opposite sides of the room. Their general behavior is running into a group of players and spinning frantically, dealing massive damage in a 360 angle area around them with their axes. They have additional attacks such as spinning slower and releasing rings of bullets, standing still, and firing spreads of bullets in a direction from their axe heads, and throwing them out and catching them like a boomerang. When a Torturer dies, the torches on its side of the room will go out.

Once both Torturers are dead, the fight will proceed into Phase 2.

Phase 2

The Apostle will make a remark, and come down from his platform by leaping into the air with a red afterimage effect, and landing in the middle of the room quickly the same way, the flames of the torches relighting and going red as the screen shakes. He will pull out his swords, spin them in his hands, and hold them outward. Red energy will swirl into the blades from the torches, as they go out, darkening the room. He will then begin to move about, choosing from attacks below.

  • Dio Segmentum: Will throw both of his swords up and catch them, slicing in arc on both sides of him meeting beneath him. The blades deal moderate damage and pierce multiple players to reach the end of their paths.
  • X-Beam: Both of his swords red energy will begin spiraling faster, as red lights begin forming on the tips of the blades. He will then slash them in an X in a direction, causing large crossing beams to appear in an X shape in that direction. These beams do heavy damage and inflict Burning for 2 seconds.
  • Vial Bombs: Will begin pulling vials off of his sash (they will not disappear from his sprite but copies will appear in his hands), and throwing them at groups of players. Each colored vial has a different effect. He goes Armored and stands still, closing what can be seen of his eyes during this attack as he throws them out almost randomly. Will throw out two vials at a time, for anywhere from three to six times. Selected vials are random.
    • Red Vial: Explodes into red particles within a 12x12 tile radius, doing light damage every second for 8 seconds. All damage done by Red Vials will heal the Apostle for that much.
    • Black Vial: Thrown to an extremely random location. Within a 4x4 area around the place the vial exploded, 3-7 Tears of Panzer will spawn.
    • Green Vial: Players caught within the 8x8 radius of the green vial will be Poisoned for 5 seconds and suffer minor damage.
    • Purple Vial: Opens a Portal at the impact site, which will begin summoning Desolate Plains Realm Enemies into the arena.
    • Yellow Vial: Releases a deadly nuerotoxin that Paralyzes and Stuns for 3 seconds, dealing minor damage. Has a quite large 15x15 tile radius, so be wary.
  • Beckon: Will point both of his swords to his center, crossing them, and then wave them in and out, then in a vortex pattern. Players will begin slowly getting sucked toward the Apostle, progressively faster over the course of 5 seconds. Players in front of him at the end of the attack will be swatted away by a medium damage strike all at once.
  • Rise Again: Will hold his swords upward, as they begin releasing multiple spiraling rings of bullets. He is Armored during this attack. As the attack progresses, the torches will begin relighting again, two at a time, in pairs every 10 seconds. The Apostle must sustain 12000 damage to stop the torches from all relighting. If they die, he will bounce away back onto the platform and summon two more Torturers from red particles in the torches. These Torturers have half as much health as the ones in Phase 1, and follow the same attacks and rules. When they die, the Apostle will return.
  • Intensify: Will dash at a player, slash them with each blade once, swat them away, and retreat backward, firing a sweeping beam over a 70 degree angle centered on the direction he pushed the player away. Each slash deals minor damage, the swat moderate damage, and the laser deals damage based on how long its touched of course.
  • Ballistic Spin: Will point both of his blades outward and begin spinning around the room like a tornado, progressively picking up speed as red particles begin spiraling around him. The faster he spins, the more damage a strike does. He progressively loses control of his direction the faster he gets. When the attack ends he will be dizzy and unable to attack for 3 seconds.

Phase 3

Entered at 30% health. The Apostle's crown gem will crack a bit. And he will lodge his left blade into the center of the arena, red cracks pulsing slightly. The Apostle will then leap back to his platform, as the sword begins flashing red. It will then release various spirals of bullet patterns, rings of bullets, focused shots, etc. for 30 seconds before going vulnerable for 10 seconds. The sword has 10,000 health. If it is not destroyed in ten seconds, it will repeat until it is. After the sword is destroyed, the cracks will get larger in the ground and continue pulsing a deep red. This is purely aesthetic... for now. The Apostle will also return to the battle, the torches relighting a deep blood red. He will begin selecting from attacks below.

  • Panzer Slash: Will use his sword to dash into a player, and then uppercut, sending them flying away, releasing a spray of twelve bullets in that direction that inflict Broken for 2 seconds.
  • Ring of Fire: The Apostle will move into the middle of the room on top of the cracks, sheath his sword, raise his arms, and the torches will glow brighter and higher. Following this, the torches will begin releasing rings of sixteen Destroyer bullets each, making the middle, near the Apostle, a hellzone. Tears of Panzer will also moderately spawn from the torches as this occurs. Lasts about 4 seconds, honestly.
  • Ruby Gaze: Various points on the arena will begin being dotted with targets, before red beams shoot down from above on those locations, dealing moderate damage and inflicting Stunned, Paralyzed, and Invincible for 5 seconds.
  • Inquisition: Will raise his sword as eight beams evenly spaced apart will begin slowly rotating. Three seconds later, spiraling bullets will begin rotating in the opposite directions. Players will have to keep moving counter clockwise with the lasers while stopping to squeeze between gaps in the eight bullet spirals going clockwise. Bullets do minor damage but inflict Slowed for 3 seconds. Lasers deal moderate damage per second, so be wary.
  • Vial Bombs Deux: Will begin pulling vials off of his sash (they will not disappear from his sprite but copies will appear in his hands), and throwing them at groups of players. Each colored vial has a different effect. He goes Armored and stands still, closing what can be seen of his eyes during this attack as he throws them out almost randomly. Will throw out two to three vials at a time, for anywhere from four to eight times.
    • Cyan Vial: Thrown very randomly, and splits into three smaller particle explosions that spread outward randomly upon landing. These cyan particles in all hit areas inflict Broken for as long as the player is in them + 3 seconds. The vials contents will stay for 12 seconds. The initial bomb has a 10x10 area and each mini burst fired out a 6x6 radius.
  • Rise Again Deux: Will hold his sword upward, as it begins releasing multiple spiraling rings of bullets. He is Armored during this attack. As the attack progresses, the torches will begin firing red particles into him, two at a time, in pairs every 7 seconds. The Apostle must sustain 8000 damage to stop the torches from all relighting. If the Apostle does not sustain enough damage he will summon two more Torturers from red particles in the torches. These Torturers have half as much health as the ones in Phase 1, and follow the same attacks and rules. The Apostle however stays, melee striking players and actively chasing them. He will remain Armored until the Torturers are dead. If he is about to enter his death phase before the Torturers die, he will become Invincible right before he does until the Torturers are killed, standing idly protected by a red force field.
  • Fallout: Will raise his sword upward and fire four large energy blasts into the air. Four massive targets will then appear on the ground one at a time, four seconds later being hit with a massive 16x16 tile explosion that inflicts Broken and Bleeding for 2 seconds. They also deal quite a lot of damage.

Death Phase

When the Apostle reaches 0 health, he will begin flashing red rapidly, his crown beginning to crack. In a panic, he will run to the center of the room and begin throwing out vials:

  • Vial Bombs Tres: Will begin pulling vials off of his sash (every ten groups of vials thrown, one of the three will disappear), and throwing them at groups of players. Each colored vial has a different effect. He stands still, invincible, his eyes wide with surprise and panic during this attack, as he throws them out almost randomly. Will throw out three vials at a time, thirty times. Selected vials are random. Once he finishes throwing all thirty groups of vials, his death animation will play and rewards will be distributed.

Death Animation

"No... I... I have failed. The souls of those I have judged and sentenced as inquisitor pull me! I can feel their spite bite into me within their grasps! I can feel... myself... sliping into The Void... its so dark..." -Said by the Apostle as the animation below plays.

The Apostle of Panzer will "fall to his knees", pointing his sword downward into the floor. The red cracks will spread beneath him as black and red tendrils begin emerging from the depths of the red pulsing fissures. They will begin to slowly wrap around his tired body, as he reaches out his arms for help, the red and black hands and tentacles pulling him down into the cracks, before finally sealing again with a slam, the torches all going out at once, leaving the room dark.

The rewards will be distributed, loot dropped, etc. as the large wooden door at the back of the room opens. The platform can now be gone upon and players may proceed through the Tower of Gladii.

Trivia

  • Used to be a Gladiator Boss actually, with a fourth the health he has now. It was decided that Gladiator Bosses were to receive a rework by making them completely Arena exclusive, and therefore removing all signs of the Cult from their influence. It was then decided that, as the Apostle, he had a surprising lack of representation in the story and Cult for his position. So he was then made the first Tower of Gladii boss on September 14, 2017, replacing the Shadow Magus, who is now in search of a new home.
  • Health changed from 160,000 to 100,000 but also made subject to Health Scaling.
